March is Women's History Month! This March, we've put together a non-exhaustive list of important women figures in the Environmentalist movement. Keep reading to learn about these amazing leaders and their accomplishments!
Greta Thunberg
Well known in the environmentalism movement and across a generation, Thunberg first made noise when she stood outside of the Swedish Parliament as part of a school strike for the climate. She’s met many key leaders, including President Barack Obama, has been invited to speak at the United Nations, and was Time’s Person of the Year in 2019. She’s increased climate consciousness and awareness across her peers and leaders, turning heads to an issue often lost in the crowd.

Peggy Shepard
Peggy Shepard is the co-founder of WE ACT for Environmental Justice, fighting for a clean and sustainable Northern Manhattan. They push for community-based action for equitable policies that affect neglected communities that are often made of minorities. She serves on the National Black Environmental Justice Network and was the first female chair of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council for the EPA. She’s made national strides in making environmental policies equitable and safe for all.

Safia Minney
Safia Minney is a renowned speaker and leader in disrupting modern slavery practices within the fashion industry, while promoting sustainability. She works to decrease negative environmental impacts of the fashion industry, while working as CEO People Tree. Minney founded People Tree, a fair trade apparel company, to increase social awareness of sustainability and slow fashion practices.

Winona LaDuke
Winona LaDuke is a Native American activist and environmentalist. She has authored many books about issues impacting Indigenous communities across the country. LaDuke advocates for protecting Indigenous lands, practices, and cultures, as well as educating audiences about the effects of environmental racism.
